When NOT to Get a Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is generally gentle and safe, but there are specific conditions and situations where it should be avoided or only done under medical supervision. Here’s a breakdown of some reason to when NOT to get MLD:
1. Acute Infections
Including fever, bacterial skin infections (e.g., cellulitis), or systemic infections.
MLD could potentially spread infection through the lymphatic system.
2. Active Cancer (Untreated or Mestastatic)
If cancer has not been cleared or is actively spreading, MLD may be contraindicated due to concerns about stimulating lymph flow.
Note: Some cancer survivors receive MLD post-treatment, but always under oncologist guidance.
3. Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
Increasing lymphatic and venous return can strain a weakened heart.
4. Acute Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or Blood Clots
MLD could dislodge a clot and cause serious complications like a pulmonary embolism.
5. Untreated Kidney Disorders
In cases where the kidneys can’t process increased lymphatic fluid return, MLD may worsen swelling or fluid overload.
